What does it do?

Sales Tax Reporter

The Intuit Sales Tax Reporter is a simple downloadable application that works with QuickBooks. If you track sales tax information in QuickBooks, then you can use Intuit Sales Tax Reporter to very easily transfer this information onto a sales tax form that you can print and file with the state (note: this initial Intuit Labs version supports only California and New York forms).

With Intuit Sales Tax Reporter, you can:

  • Save time in filling out state-approved sales tax forms
  • Achieve accuracy and confidence with our automated data transfer and form calculations
  • Create signature-ready forms for printing and filing

Requirements:

To use this release you will need to have QuickBooks 2009 and be filing California sales tax.

We love feedback! Have an idea for Intuit Sales Tax Reporter? Want this application to include your state? Questions about using it? We want to hear from you! Please leave a comment below or send us an SalesTaxTeam@intuit.com.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Can't use it. The app won't let me change the yearly dates. I don't pay my yearly sales tax on fiscal year. My sales tax is on a July thrugh June basis.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Washington just changed sales tax reporting to match california's method. There are a huge number of tax authorities. This app would make a great addition to quickbooks and help it compete for market share against a couple of recent new apps. Save me about two hours a month!

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

This is a feature that I have been wanting. Can you please add Arizona to your list? (I also need Texas.)

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Would love to see this include Tennessee.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I would love to see Colorado forms added. Thanks!

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thanks for your feedback. We have added Colorado to the list of requested states.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I would like to see integration with Quickbooks Online and Indiana added to the list.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thank you for your feedback. We hope to eventually integrate the Sales Tax Reporter with QuickBooks Online. Indiana has already been added to the list of requested states.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We're using QB 2010 Premier Accountant and the file shows the following error whether in single user or multi user mode: "Error in reading data from QuickBooks. Ensure that QuickBooks is running.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We are investigating the error you are seeing with QB 2010 Premier Accountant, but so far have not been able to detect a reason for it.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Will you keep the CA sales tax up to date, considering this can be a setup utility to double check our work for the online form(s)?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We certainly hope to update the CA sales tax forms when necessary, but a firm decision has not yet been made.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thank you so much! With taking on a new job that the prior accountant incorrectly filed three quarterly returns this application made correcting these a breeze. Agree with the others getting this to be able to electronically file would be great. Keep the good work up for having used Intuit’s products since 1997 with Enterprise 9.0 currently I am enjoying so many great tools.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We are pleased that you found the Sales Tax Reporter to be helpful. We will be working on adding electronic filing in the future. Thanks for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

The Sales Tax Reporter sounds helpful for sure, especially if you get Colorado and Wyoming up and running. I fill out 25-30 different reports per quarter. However, improvements to the Pay Sales Tax window in QB would equally helpful. The unsizable window and difficulty of use has been a frustration of ours since version 2006. Each year we keep hoping for enhancements but so far nothing has changed. We love QB, but the sales tax module sure could be improved upon! Thank you.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Lori,
Colorado is already on our list of requested states and we will add Wyoming. Thank you for your comments.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

It took me some time to get use too. However I found it powerful but incomplete. NYC had 2 sales tax codes this quarter because teh rate changed. I hope you keep improving this and add features that can update this form on the fly.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We appreciate your feedback. Your suggestions will help us as we work on enhancements.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I am having problems filing out the form 401-ez the report is annually from 7-1-08 to 6-30-09 due on 7-31-09 and it's not giving me the dates on the form all it says is that it is due on 2-2-2010 i need help you can call me at (831) 975-4728
Thanks Yolanda

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Yolanda,

At this time the product is available only for users whose business operates on a calendar year. We plan to add fiscal year filings in the future.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Will Texas be added?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Texas is already on our list of requested states. Thank you for your interest.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I have payroll figured out, but I need to setup liquor sales tax and food sales tax so I can run reports and pay the IRS. Where do I start

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Joyce,

QuickBooks has an excellent tutorial on setting up sales tax in QuickBooks. Go to the Vendors menu/Sales Tax and click on Manage Sales Tax.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I am running QB Premier V2009, the program is open and I still get the message and

Error in reading data from QuickBooks. Ensure that QuickBooks is running

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I get this message every time I try to use this. I opened QBV 2009 before opening the sales tax reporter :

Error in reading data from QuickBooks. Ensure that QuickBooks is running
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
What can I do to make this work.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Dear Deborah,
This error usually occurs if either QB is not running locally on the same desktop or if the QB version is 2008 or earlier. However, you have mentioned that both conditions have been taken care of.
Could you re-try running the application and make sure that: You see a message in QB asking you if an external application 'Intuit Sales Tax Reporter' can access your data? If you don't see this message, then we may need to set up a remote debugging session with you.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Can you e-file the CA return or does it have to be paper filed?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Linda,

At this time, electronic filing is not offered with this application. We plan to offer this feature in the future. In the meantime, you can print the report and use the data to complete the information required for electronic filing on the state website.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

The application won't work for my company since I report my California taxes once a year except that the dates are for instance, 6/1/08 - 5/31/09, and your program won't let me change the yearly date range.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Larry,

We hope to add the fiscal annual report in the future. Thank you for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I don't see an answer to my situation...

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Larry,

At this time the product is available only for users whose business operates on a calendar year.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Just downloaded and tested on a clients file. Sweet! Most of my NY clients I've set up to file electronically, throught the NYS website, but this is a great way to calculate/worksheet before going online. Thanks!

I would suggest pricing be related to a group of states (3-5)...for example, NY/PA since I am close to the PA border this may be convenient. I'm sure there are other closely related states.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Marcia,

We're pleased that you are finding the Sales Tax Reporter to be helpful. Thank you for your feedback & suggestion regarding pricing.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hey, Add North Carolina. I'm sure you have a lot of users in the Old North State.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We will be sure to add North Carolina to the list of requested states. Thanks for you feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I need to do a BOE 1150 prepayment form for California. I don't see that option. Am I missing it or is it in the works for the future?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Currently BOE 1150 is not part of the offering, but we will certainly put it on the list of forms to add in the future.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I wished this would work with version 2008!

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

This would be a great tool for use with our clients, but would need to ability to e-file the returns and remit a payment electronically too for it to be a reall time saver. Some states require the returns to be e-filed now.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Jeni,

We know that many states are beginning to require electronic filing and payment and plan to offer this feature in the future. In the meantime, this application can be used to print the report and use the data to complete the information required for electronic filing on the state website.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

On the NY forms, would it be possible to include the monthly reporting forms?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Judy,

We hope to add both the monthly and the annual reporting forms in the future. Thanks for your interest.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

This app sounds great! Please keep me up to date when it's available for Florida. Thanks.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Estela,

We are still determining which states will be added and in what order, but we will certainly add Florida to the list. Thank you for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Sounds like a great app. I sure need it for doing computer consulting work here in Minnesota. Please, please add us to the list.

Sales and Use Tax plus local Taxes = one big headache!

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your feedback. We will add Minnesota to the list of requested states.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Sounds like a terrific app. Please add Arizona to the list. When will this product be available to other states?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Eli,

So far the order in which states will be added has not been determined, but we will add Colorado to the list of requested states.
Thanks for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Works perfectly now.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Michael,

That is great! Thanks for letting us know.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I installed the latest beta and am having issues. When I run the program I get the following error:

ExpressSales Tax Filer has stopped working, then it closes the program.

I am using Vista.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Response to Michael Castagnetti:

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you are having issues with the program and are really interested in knowing what went wrong. We will contact you by email ASAP to get more information.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Georgia Status?

Thanks

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Stacy,

Thanks for your feedback. We will add Georgia to our list of states to support. So far we offer CA and NY and will be adding more states ASAP.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Will this app be available on all the states sales tax.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your question. The long range plan is to offer sales tax forms for all states, but we are in the preliminary stage of development. So far CA and NY are available and we will be adding more states ASAP.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Every time I open the application - it says that it has caused an error and closes. Unable to run it at this point.

Took me 15 minutes to find the application as it was not filed with the QuickBooks application and there was no special folder - was lumped in with other miscellaneus applications.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thank you for your feedback. The application is accessible via the ‘Start -> Programs’ menu.
The application currently works with QB 2009 or later. We are really interested in knowing what went wrong - we will contact you over email for the next steps.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Response to Stuart McClain:

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you are having issues with the program and are really interested in knowing what went wrong. We will contact you by email ASAP to get more information and help resolve the problem.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Looking forward to using this here in The Enchanted Mitten (Michigan)!

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Stacy,

We appreciate your feedback and will add Michigan to the list of future states supported.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I would like to say this is app was so very easy. The statement we thought after we completed the taxes was "Where is the EASY button".

Thanks Intuit!

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We are delighted that you found the Sales Tax Reporter to be easy. We aimed for accuracy and ease of use. Thanks for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thanks for your feedback, Mr. Worden.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I am VERY impressed, it worked much better than I thought it would. My big issue, is that Quickbooks doesn't have a mechanism to track amounts of tax that we paid on items that were later resold and on items that we purchased without tax that we are required to pay tax on. I've had to jerryrig sub-accounts to my sales-tax payable to get that information reporting properly for my returns. Then, when running the "Pay Sales Tax" routine in QuickBooks, ends up being a big kluge with a series of correcting journal entries and unresolved vendor allocations. Your product won't be complete until QuickBooks can handle these types of transactions more elegantly. In addition, I need to utilize California's partial exemptions. I don't need to tell you, ideally your application should get all of it's numbers from QuickBooks and not require any additional data entry. Thanks.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thanks for your feedback. We will add Colorado to our list of states to support.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Please add Colorado. I have a lot of clients that I do their sales tax returns and would benefit from it.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Unless you can operate the Mac with Windows simulator, for now, this is not in our plan. Thanks for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thank you, Sara. I'm using QB 2009 for Mac and don't wish to use Windows. :-)

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I just noticed (okay, I'm slow) that this is available for PC only. So since we're all Mac (in addition to being required to file eletronically), there's no point in my paying much attention to this any longer (right?).

;-)

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

We will add Colorado to the list of requested states.
Thanks for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Response to Mr. Don Franklin,

We would supply all states supported in one application, not separate states. Even if the agency supplies a website where users can enter the information, it is very useful to get the tax return calculated properly, in order to enter the exact jurisdiction numbers and amounts.
Thanks for your feedback.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Status on Colorado?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Will apps like this be integrated into the Quickbooks's programs for all states or will clients need to purchase individually by state? I have been encouraging all of my MD clients to forego paper returns and to file everything (Fed, SWT and Sales tax on line).. It's really easy and only takes a minute for each.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Wow, get Maryland and Virginia up and running. Will be a great selling tool and will assist us with our bookkeeping clients.

Is this good for QuickBooks Online as well?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Response to Ronald Wolfe:

Thanks for your feedback. We will add Maryland and Virginia to the list of requested states. So far the application is available only for Desktop, but plans are to make it available for QuickBooks Online as well.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Can you add Kentucky and Indiana to the list? Both states have e-file options as well. I have a number of clients who would benefit from this app.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your feedback. I will add Kentucky and Indiana to the list of next releases.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

I'm installing it now. Can't wait to dive in and take a look.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Hi, Michael

We expect to release the New York forms the first or second week of July. I will add New Jersey to the list of next releases. Thanks again,

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Are you planning on creating this for other states? If so what is the pricing plan? I would like to be kept updated as to your progress.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thanks for your question. We are currently working on adding the New York forms. These forms will be added in time for the second quarter filing. More states may be added depending on demand from users.
A pricing plan has not been determined yet; for now the application use is free.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Can you inform me when you have NY setup. I would like to beta test this and possibly introduce my cleints to it. I would also be interested in NJ.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Who is the Project Manager for this application/experiment within Intuit?

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Samir Khosla| Accounting Professionals Division, Intuit | Product Management

Sara Clancy| Consumer Group, Intuit | Product Development

Arun Venkatesan| Small Business Division, Intuit | Product Development

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Too late for us. ;-) We're required to file electronically, as of this past quarter.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

If this application is officially launched, we hope to offer electronic filing in the future.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

If electronic filing is required in California, is the recommended use of this tool to print the report and use the data to complete the electronic filing report? I'd like to send this to many of my APD California firm's as another touch from Intuit...working to help their clients.

Intuit Sales Tax Reporter

Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate it.

California is phasing in electronic filing over the next two years. Those businesses that have already been transitioned from paper to electronic filing would not be able to use the Sales Tax Reporter for filing.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you need further information.
